Socio-environmental Function of Roofs: Conceptualization, Typology of Solutions and Regulation
This research project deepened ZeroCem's investigation into the potential of urban building rooftop spaces for ecosystem services, from a focus on Nature-Based Solutions (NbS).
The work proposes that urban coverings, roofs and slabs should be understood as having a socio-environmental function, which should support urban green infrastructure planning strategies and urban regulation so that it is possible to expand the allocation of these spaces for ecosystemic purposes, considering the centrality of combating socio-spatial inequalities and vulnerabilities.
Based on this argument, the study advances in detailing possible types of NBS that can be developed in rooftops and in identifying factors and criteria that influence their implementation in an urban context in the Global South like São Paulo. We also present possible avenues for regulatory advancement to inform a policy to promote sustainable rooftops in the municipality.
